위에 언급한 다양한 간호학 최상위 학교로 진학할 수 있는 방법은 다양하다. 이 이외에도 Community College를 통하여 2년 과정을 마친 후, 대학으로 진학하는 방법도 있다.

미국의 간호사는 RN (Registered Nurse)와 NP (Nurse Practitioner)로 나뉘게 된다. RN은 일반적인 간호사이며, NP의 경우, 의사와 마찬가지로 환자에 대한 1차 진료가 가능한 실무 간호사 (Advanced Practice Register Nurses, APRN)이다.

NP는 MSN(간호과학 석사) 또는 DNP(간호 실무 의사), 환자 인구 집중의 국가 인증, APRN License 등 고급학위를 소지한 자로, 일부 주에서는 완전히 독립적으로 Clinic를 차려 일을 할 수 있는 권한이 부여된다.
